ISLAMABAD/ JIANGXI: At least 19 people were killed and 20 wounded in a road accident in eastern China’s Jiangxi province on Sunday, state media reported.
The injured had been moved to a nearby hospital, state broadcaster CCTV reported, citing local authorities.
The accident took place just before 1 a.m. (1700 GMT) in Nanchang County. An investigation is underway to find the cause of the incident.
Truck hit roadside funeral
The accident took place when a truck hit a roadside funeral procession, reported local media.
Reportedly, people were attending a funeral when they were hit by a truck, with most of the dead and injured being funeral attenders.
About an hour after the news of the incident emerged, Nanchang County traffic police issued travel tips to drivers warning that the area was experiencing “foggy weather”.
The accident occurred as China has begun the 40-day period of lunar new year travel, in which millions of people are expected to commute. Beijing has lifted Covid quarantine requirements for inbound travellers.
This Lunar New Year public holiday will be the first since 2020 without domestic travel restrictions.
