ISLAMABAD: The notable Urdu poet of 20th century Josh Malihabadi (Shabbir Hasan Khan) is being remembered today (22 February) on his 41st death anniversary.
Born in Malihabad near Lucknow in 1898, he died in Islamabad on 22 February 1982, at the age of 83.
Josh inherited a poetry legacy from his great-grandfather, grandfather, and father. He started writing poetry at an early age, and his work features unique and interesting diction and metaphors.
Josh’s poetry is best known for its acute sociopolitical concerns and romantic preoccupations, earning him the title, ‘Poet of Revolution.’ Throughout his life, he published several collections of poetry, including ‘Shola-o-Shabnam’, ‘Junoon-o-Hikmat’, ‘Rooh-e-Adab’, and ‘Nawaaredaat-e-Josh’.
Poet’s renowned works
His renowned works of prose include ‘Ishaaraat’ and ‘Nujoom-O-Jawahar’.
During his career, he worked a Shalimar Pictures in Poona, where he wrote lyrics for films. He also worked as an editor of Aajkal, a literary journal published by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, for 8 years until he decided to migrate to Pakistan in 1956.
