DHAKA: A retired Major General of the Bangladesh Army has said that if India attacks Pakistan, Bangladesh should seize the opportunity to occupy seven northeastern states of India.
Major General (Retd) ALM Fazlur Rahman in a Facebook post in Bangla language said, “If India attacks Pakistan, Bangladesh should occupy the seven states of Northeastern India.”
A former head of the Bangladesh Rifles (now Border Guard Bangladesh) said Bangladesh should start discussions with China for joint military actions in this regard.
However, Bangladesh’s interim government has clarified that it does not endorse Rahman’s comments, stating that he made the remarks in a personal capacity.
“The comments do not reflect the position or policies of the government of Bangladesh, and as such, the government neither endorses nor supports such rhetoric in any form or manner,” Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Friday.
Pahalgam incident
The tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours escalated after gunmen attacked tourists in the Pahalgam area of occupied Kashmir on 22 April, killing 26 people and injuring 17.
India swiftly blamed Pakistan for the attack without presenting any credible evidence. Pakistan condemned the attack and strongly rejected the Indian government’s baseless accusations.
A day after the Pahalgam incident on 23 April, India’s Cabinet Committee on Security approved measures including the closure of the Wagah-Attari border crossing and the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.
In response, Pakistan’s National Security Committee (NSC) met on 24 April and warned that any attempt by India to block water flows into Pakistan would be considered an act of war.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for an independent investigation into the incident.
Pakistan Army reaction
The top military leadership of Pakistan has resolved that Pakistan’s path to peace and development will not be deferred by terrorism, coercion, or aggression.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to peace and stability, the Special Corps Commanders’ Conference held here warned that any attempt to impose war would be met with a swift and decisive response.
Any attempt to impose war will be responded to, surely and decisively and aspirations of people of Pakistan shall be respected at all costs, InshaAllah, the corps commanders categorically stated.
Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir led the Special Corps Commanders’ Conference on Friday, warning of India’s alleged destabilisation tactics and vowing a resolute response to any aggression. The military leadership voiced concern over rising tensions in the region and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to defend its sovereignty.

Pakistan Army Chief warns Indian attack to face swift response
Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir on Thursday said that Pakistan remained committed to regional peace however, any military misadventure by India will be met with a “swift, resolute, and notch-up response”.
“Let there be no ambiguity: any military misadventure by India will be met with a swift, resolute, and notch-up response. While Pakistan remains committed to regional peace, our preparedness and resolve to safeguard national interests is absolute,” Army Chief General Munir stated as quoted by the military’s media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
