Qatari Emir Lauds Increase of Partnership with Japan to ‘Strategic Level’

DOHA: The emir of Qatar has welcomed the elevation of relations with Japan to the “strategic partnership level,” Arab media reported on Tuesday.

In a statement, the Emir’s office said Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani held talks in Doha with Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who arrived on Tuesday in Doha for an official trip.

The enhanced ties, Al Thani added, “will contribute to the development of cooperation in fields of common interest.”  The statement maintained the meeting discussed the current cooperation between the two sides, especially in the sectors of energy and economy.

The Prime Minister of Japan expressed his pleasure in announcing the elevation of the relationship to the strategic level to further strengthen bilateral ties, especially in economy, energy, security, defense, and academic exchanges.

He also extended his felicitations to the Qatari emir on the 10th anniversary of his rise to power and also highlighted the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Doha and Tokyo.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia served as the first stop on the Japanese PM’s Gulf trip on Sunday. Before arriving in Qatar, he also traveled to the UAE, and on Monday, the two sides inked 23 deals to expand their mutual investment and trade.
