ISLAMABAD/SYDNEY: A Qantas plane traveling from New Zealand to Sydney landed safely after mayday call following a engine problem over the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday.

According to the Arab News, Qantas said that flight 144 landed at the Sydney airport after take-off from Auckland, New Zealand — a 3.5-hour journey between the two neighbours’ populous cities.

Plane 737 lands safely

The Boeing 737 plane experienced a problem with one of its two engines after about an hour’s journey from Sydney.

The mayday, an SOS call given when a plane is in a grave and imminent danger and needs immediate assistance downgraded to a PAN-PAN, which required possible assistance before the plane landed.

Passengers said they were told when they left the flight that an engine had failed.

They have described their experience of engine malfunction as a “slight shudder” and “bumpy-like turbulence.”

Sydney airport authorities said emergency crews had been put on standby as the precaution, including firefighters, police, and ambulances.

Strategic Aviation Solutions chief Neil Hanford said that 737s can take-off quickly and land safely on a single engine.
