MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his optimism on Wednesday for a “peaceful” resolution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, without specifically mentioning the ceasefire agreement reached between Armenian separatists and Azerbaijan.

During a meeting with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the Russian President said that they stated, “We maintain close communication with all parties involved in the conflict, including authorities in Yerevan, the separatist authorities in Stepanakert, and in Baku. My hope is that we can achieve de-escalation and move toward a peaceful resolution of this issue.”

It remains unclear whether the remarks, which were distributed by state television, were made before or after the ceasefire announcement in Karabakh.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov refrained from commenting on the ceasefire agreement announced by Karabakh separatists and Azerbaijan, stating, “I don’t have the details yet,” during a daily briefing.

Earlier on Wednesday, Azerbaijan declared a halt to its military operation in the Nagorno-Karabakh region after separatist Armenian forces agreed to lay down their arms and engage in reintegration talks.
