BELGRADE: The Southern European states situated on the Adriatic coast experienced a major power breakdown on Friday, said Montenegro power distributor CEDIS and local media.
According to the reports Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia where temperatures approached 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40°C), faced the problem.
CEDIS on its Facebook page stated that almost the entire area of Montenegro is without power because of the network outages.
The capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo and the cities of Banja Luka and Mostar are without electricity said local media.
According to Croatia’s HEP power utility, the outage in parts of the country had been caused by a global disturbance that hit several countries.
The company said it is carrying out an analysis with the system operators of neighbouring countries to determine the cause of the power outage. HEP added it had put its production capacities into full operation to resume power supply in the shortest possible time.
Most of Croatia’s Adriatic coast is without power, state TV HRT reported. It said the traffic in the coastal city of Split had been stopped after traffic lights stopped working. It added sirens of ambulances could be heard throughout the city.
Albanian TV said a number of towns including the capital Tirana are out of electricity. It quoted sources as saying that the malfunction of an interconnector in Montenegro had caused the power breakdown.
