WARSAW: Poland has assured Ukraine of its unwavering support for Kyiv’s NATO membership bid during a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Warsaw.
The Polish President, Andrzej Duda, stated that his country firmly supports Ukraine’s bid to join the alliance and that the security guarantees being provided are an “introduction to Ukraine’s full membership in NATO.”
Duda also pledged to provide Ukraine with additional military support, including the transfer of Poland’s remaining fleet of MiG-29 fighter jets.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Poland has been one of Kyiv’s staunchest supporters, providing weapons and welcoming refugees. Poland has also delivered Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine, which the country had long sought for its effort to dislodge Russia from its territory.
Zelensky thanks Poland for support
Zelensky thanked Poland for its support in Ukraine’s efforts to enter both the European Union and NATO. He expressed his gratitude to the ordinary Polish people who have been helping the ordinary Ukrainian people since the beginning of the Russian invasion, saying that “Ukraine will never forget your humane attitude towards Ukrainians.”
The visit is Zelensky’s sixth meeting with the Polish President, with Poland’s head of state has travelled to Kyiv four times over the past year. The talks between the two leaders are focused on defence issues as the war in Ukraine rages on.
Zelensky is also due to meet volunteers and rescue workers, as well as the mayors of Polish cities along the border with Ukraine. The visit was kept secret until being announced on Monday.
