Philippines’ President Says South China Sea Keeps him “Up at Night”

MANILA: Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr has said that tension in the South China Sea keeps him up at night, but they were committed to peace in the region, western media reported on Thursday.

He was addressing the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. He said his country was watching as a “bystander” whenever tensions rise following Chinese or US warships cross the region. He said that they will suffer if something happens wrong.

The President said that situation in the region “keeps you up in the day, night and most of the time”. Recently, Marcos jnr also held discussion with his Chinese counterpart President Xi Jinping during a visit to China.

Beijing and Manila vowed to address maritime disagreements via “friendly consultation” during the visit. The South China Sea is a key strategic waterway claimed by Beijing, Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, and Malaysia.
