Philippines Power Outage Strands Thousands at Airports Across Archipelago Nation

ISLAMABAD: After a power outage in the capital of the Philippines capital Manila result in the knocking out of the radar and communication equipment, hundreds of flights across the country were delayed, diverted, or canceled.

On Sunday, at the Manila international and domestic airport, aviation officials found a technical issue related to the center of air traffic management.

In and out of Manila, over 360 flights were delayed, diverted, or canceled. A total of 56,000 passengers were affected.

The power failure coincided with the end of the New Year and Christmas rush of passengers returning to the capital for school and work.

Across the country, check-in counters were crowded and often presented chaotic scenes. The reason being, people either wanted to find out whether their flight would actually fly or wanted to re-book their airline tickets.

Those who had boarded their planes prior to the glitch had to eventually disembark after waiting for many hours.

The problem’s actual cause was not disclosed by the airport officials till the filing of this report. Airport officials did not initially specify the cause of the problem.

The lack of information from the airport staff and the malfunction itself left many passengers annoyed and outraged.
