PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s provincial capital, Peshawar, is currently grappling with severe smog, which is attributed to the release of toxic fumes and escalating dust during the winter season. This environmental issue is taking a toll on the city’s residents, with over 1000 individuals contracting chest infections and flu on a daily basis.

The impact of the smog is particularly pronounced among vulnerable demographics, such as children and the elderly, who are more susceptible to respiratory ailments. Health experts note that the three main teaching hospitals in Peshawar are witnessing a surge in patients, with more than 1000 cases daily being registered in chest and pulmonology wards.

The latest report from the KP Health Department reveals that over 9000 patients sought medical attention in Peshawar hospitals in the past week, complaining of chest infections and high fevers. Common symptoms include severe fever, headache, and respiratory congestion, leading doctors to prescribe antibiotics, anti-allergy medications, and cough syrups.

In response to the smog, Dr. Taj Muhammad, a Senior Chest Specialist and representative of the Pakistan Chest Society, advises residents to take precautions akin to those employed during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as wearing masks to cover their faces. He especially urges the elderly to minimize outdoor activities during the colder periods.

The cold weather, combined with smog, has caused a surge in viral chest infections in the region, prompting health authorities to emphasize preventive measures like staying warm, practicing good hygiene, and washing hands regularly.

Peshawar’s Air Quality Hits Alarming Level

The Air Quality Index (AQI) for Peshawar is alarming, exceeding 200 AQI. Despite a reading of 161 AQI on November 28, which is categorized as ‘Unhealthy’ for public health, precautionary measures are advised. Citizens are cautioned against outdoor exercise, encouraged to keep windows closed to avoid outdoor pollutants, wear masks when outdoors, and utilize air purifiers.

On November 26, 2023, Peshawar experienced a record-high pollution level, with an AQI of 285 marked as ‘Very Unhealthy.’ Concerned citizens are urging authorities to take action against major contributors to pollution, including industries emitting smoke, vehicles, and open burning.
