Football Legend Pele Dies at 82

SAO PAULO: Pele, the Brazilian football legend, who rose from poverty to become one of the best-known soccer players in modern history, has died at the age of 82.

Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Pauloa announced on Thursday that Pele died at 3:27 p.m. because of multiple organ failures resulting from the progression of colon cancer linked with his previous medical condition.

The medical center said that love and inspiration marked the journey of King Pele, who peacefully passed away. It said that Pele had enchanted the entire world with his genius in sports, prevented a war, did social work, and also spread love which he (Pele) most believed to be the cure for all their problems.

Sportsmen, politicians, and fans of football are paying rich tribute to the legendary footballer.

The French President wrote on Twitter. “The game. The king. Eternity,”.

Pele joined Santos in 1956 and turned the small club into one of the most famous names in the game of football. The club’s press officer said that a rouse is likely to be held at Santos’ Urbano Caldeira stadium on Monday.

Pele won three football World Cups, the first time in Sweden in 1958, the second in Chile and the third in Mexico. Pele retired from his club Santos in 1974 but later made a surprise comeback by inking a lucrative agreement to join the New York Cosmos. He scored 1,283 goals in his 21-year career. He became the first global icon during the 20th century.

With his charming smile and humility that charmed crowds of fans, Pele was better known than many Hollywood actors or presidents. He was named a “national treasure” by Brazil’s government, “Athlete of the Century” by the International Olympic Committee, and co-“Football Player of the Century” by world soccer body FIFA.

Pele believed that his talent was a divine gift, and he spoke touchingly about how football allowed him to travel the globe, and bring joyfulness to cancer patients and victims of wars.

He said during a 2013 interview with Reuters that God gave him the ability to make people happy. He said, “No matter what I did, I tried not to forget that.”

The CBF wrote on its social media account, “Pelé was much more than the greatest sportsman of all time,”. Kylian Mbappé, the French star offered his condolences and wrote on Twitter, “The king of football has left us but his legacy will never be forgotten,”.
