ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mohammad Shehbaz Sharif, on Sunday strongly condemned the act of desecrating the Holy Qur’an in Sweden by an extremist Danish politician. Leader of the Danish party Rasmus Paludan burned a copy of the Holy Qur’an outside the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm.

Muslim countries, including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Jordan, and Kuwait, have condemned the abhorrent activity.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took to Twitter to condemn the shameful act, saying the “garb of freedom of expression can not be used to hurt religious emotions of Muslims across the world.”

The PM stated in his Tweet: “No words are enough to condemn the horrible act of desecrating the Holy Qur’an by a right-wing extremist in Sweden. The cover of freedom of expression cannot be used to hurt the religious emotions of Muslims worldwide.”

Swedish politician’s act widely condemned

Earlier, Pakistan’s Foreign Office also condemned the action, emphasizing that it hurt the emotions of the 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide.

The ministry said such actions are not covered under any legitimate freedom of expression or opinion.

It said Pakistan’s concerns are being conveyed to the authorities in Sweden, urging them to be mindful of the sentiments of all Muslims and take steps to prevent Islamophobic actions. Paludan, who also holds Swedish citizenship, has held several demonstrations where he has burned copies of the Holy Quran.
