Pakistan’s Law Minister Hints at Extension in Term of Caretaker Govt

ISLAMABAD: Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar on Monday hinted at the possibility of extending the caretaker governments’ terms in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.

The minister said in Parliament that the constitution allows for the extension in the term of caretaker setup in case of law and order or economic issues.

He cited past examples of delays in elections due to floods in 1998 and the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

Tarar said that the Election Commission of Pakistan will look into issues like election expenditure and census within the constitutional provisions.

Law minister says ECP to make final decision

The law minister further said that the final decision in this regard would be made by the election commission and it will be based on the constitution.

While talking on the census issue, the minister said that it was too early to say which census would be used in the upcoming election. He said that last time, an amendment was done in Article 51 to hold elections on the basis of the old census.
