Key Points

  • Pakistan’s IT exports rise 18 per cent year-on-year to $435 million in September
  • Freelancers’ export earnings hit a record $197 million, up 49 per cent
  • Goods exports exceed $3 billion, reaching a 20-month high

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s information technology (IT) exports reached $435 million in September 2026, the second-highest monthly figure on record, while freelance export earnings hit an all-time high of $197 million, Adviser to the Finance Minister Khurram Schehzad said.

On social media platform X, Schehzad said September’s IT exports were just $2 million below the all-time high of $437 million recorded in December 2025.

The latest figure rose 18 per cent year-on-year and 10 per cent month-on-month.

IT exports totalled $1.25 billion in the first quarter of fiscal year 2026-27, covering July to September, he said.

Schehzad attributed the growth to targeted incentives for exporters, particularly in the IT sector, in the FY27 budget, as well as to the expansion of Pakistan’s digital economy.

He said the gains supported foreign exchange earnings without adding to debt, and created high-value jobs and connected Pakistani businesses with international markets.

Pakistan freelancers’ record

Pakistan’s freelancers earned a record $197 million from exports in September, up 49 per cent year-on-year and 11 per cent from August, according to Schehzad.

Freelance export earnings reached around $550 million in the first quarter of FY27, a 46 per cent increase from the same period last year.

Schehzad said the growing freelance economy was turning the country’s young digital talent into export earnings, foreign exchange inflows, high-value opportunities and greater integration with global markets.

In another post, the adviser said Pakistan’s goods exports exceeded $3 billion in September, reaching their highest monthly level in 20 months.

IT and freelance services are an important source of foreign exchange for Pakistan, generating overseas earnings without creating the repayment obligations associated with external borrowing. Sustaining this growth will depend on international demand, reliable digital infrastructure, access to global payment channels and a predictable policy environment for technology businesses and independent professionals.
