Pakistan’s Digital Economy Expands as IT Exports and Connectivity Grow

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s information technology and telecommunications sector continued its strong growth trajectory during FY2026, with rising exports, expanding digital connectivity and increasing freelance earnings reinforcing the sector’s role as a key driver of economic growth.

According to the latest Economic Survey, Pakistan’s IT exports reached US$3.39 billion during the July-March period of FY2026, reflecting the growing global demand for the country’s software development, business process outsourcing and digital services.

The sector also generated a trade surplus of US$2.91 billion, underlining its importance as a major source of foreign exchange earnings. Officials say the continued expansion of digital services is helping strengthen Pakistan’s external accounts while creating employment opportunities for skilled professionals.

Freelancers remained a significant contributor to the digital economy, bringing in US$856.3 million during the period. Pakistan has emerged as one of the leading freelance markets in the region, supported by a growing pool of technology professionals serving clients across the world.

The telecommunications sector also posted encouraging results. Telecom revenues reached Rs837 billion during the fiscal year, reflecting increased digital usage and demand for communication services.

Pakistan’s digital connectivity continued to expand, with broadband subscribers reaching 161 million by the end of March 2026. Total telecom subscribers, including mobile and fixed-line users, climbed to 207.2 million, highlighting the widespread adoption of communication technologies across the country.

Industry experts view connectivity as a critical foundation for digital transformation, enabling e-commerce, online education, financial technology and remote work opportunities.

Officials say continued investment in digital infrastructure, technology exports and innovation is helping position Pakistan’s IT and telecommunications sector as one of the country’s most dynamic industries, supporting economic growth, job creation and greater integration into the global digital economy.
