WASHINGTON: Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Masood Khan, has been honoured with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award for Diplomacy and International Service in recognition of his service, commitment and leadership.
The ambassador received the coveted award at the 31st International Salute to the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. organized by the Institute for the Advancement of Multicultural and Minority Medicine (IAMMM) on Sunday. The ceremony was attended by more than 150 guests.
Ambassador pays tribute to Martin Luther King Jr
In his opening address as Chairman, the ambassador paid tribute to the great US leader. He thanked IAMMM for the conferment of the award and said that it was an honour for him to be associated with the iconic Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his mission.
He said that Dr. King’s vision continues to inspire human rights activists, defenders, world leaders and lawmakers. He added that Dr. King’s struggle spurred the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa and supported the demise of colonialism. Khan added that in line with the vision of Dr. King, we should together make efforts for the eradication of poverty and climate justice worldwide.
Speaking on the occasion, US Senator Chris Van Hollen said that it was important that America and other countries primarily responsible for carbon emissions and climate change did their best to address the inequities and harm imposed on nations with minimal carbon emissions.
Ambassador Masood Khan thanked the senator and said that Islamabad was working to get recognition for climate justice, not just for itself but for all vulnerable countries around the globe.
