ISLAMABAD: Two loud explosions were heard in Gujranwala on Thursday morning, prompting the activation of the air defence system installed in the cantonment area.
“The system intercepted and shot down an Indian drone attempting to breach Pakistani airspace,” according to the security sources.
The drone was flying at a very high altitude when it tried to enter Pakistani territory.
The air defence system in Gujranwala Cantonment responded swiftly and neutralised the threat. The sources stated that the drone was engaged and destroyed as soon as it entered the city’s airspace.
The security officials confirmed the operation took place near the Gujranwala Cantonment area. The air defence system fired two rounds to bring the high-altitude Indian drone down.
According to police sources, the drone crashed near the village of Dinga in the Gujrat district. Law-enforcement agencies, including the police, reached the crash site and recovered the debris from fields in the village of Pir Jhanda.
Investigations are underway to determine the drone’s make and specifications. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.
Earlier, Pakistan’s National Security Committee (NSC), which met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in the chair decided that in consonance with Article-51 of the UN Charter, Pakistan reserves the right to respond, in self-defence, at a time, place, and manner of its choosing to avenge the loss of innocent Pakistani lives and blatant violation of its sovereignty.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, on Wednesday briefed the Islamabad-based diplomatic corps on India’s air strikes in Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir during the night of 6 and 7 May 2025, which claimed the lives of 31 innocent civilians.
Addressing a specially convened session at Pakistan’s Foreign Office, Ishaq Dar strongly condemned the Indian aggression, stating it was a blatant violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and a serious threat to regional peace and stability.
The Indian military action comes two weeks after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 people were killed.
India swiftly blamed Pakistan for orchestrating the attack. Pakistan condemned the attack and strongly denied India’s “baseless allegations”.
Pakistan also offered an independent, neutral, and transparent international investigation into the Pahalgam incident. However, New Delhi did not respond to Pakistan’s offer and continued with its aggressive posture.
