ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday urged all parties to exercise restraint and uphold the ceasefire between Iran and the United States and its allies, stressing the need to give diplomacy space as Pakistan prepares to host high-stakes peace talks in Islamabad on Friday.

PM Sharif, in a message on X, called on all parties to the conflict to respect the agreed two-week truce, emphasising that sustained calm was essential for advancing negotiations aimed at a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

“Violations of the ceasefire have been reported at few places across the conflict zone which undermine the spirit of peace process,” PM Sharif stated.

PM Sharif called on both Washington and Tehran to honour the mutually agreed two-week truce and pursue a peaceful resolution through dialogue.

“I earnestly and sincerely urge all parties to exercise restraint and respect the ceasefire for two weeks, as agreed upon, so that diplomacy can take a lead role towards peaceful settlement of the conflict.”

Prime Minister Sharif’s remarks come as Islamabad positions itself as a key mediator, facilitating dialogue between Washington and Tehran following weeks of conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran.

Earlier on Wednesday morning, PM Sharif announced that the United States, its allies, and Iran had agreed to a ceasefire “everywhere”, including Lebanon, following mediation by his government to stop weeks of fighting.

“I am pleased to announce that the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America, along with their allies, have agreed to an immediate ceasefire everywhere, including Lebanon and elsewhere, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY,” PM Sharif posted on X.

He added that Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, would welcome delegations from both countries on Friday to hold negotiations aimed at reaching a “conclusive agreement”.

“We earnestly hope that the ‘Islamabad Talks’ succeed in achieving sustainable peace and wish to share more good news in the coming days,” he said.

Both Tehran and Washington announced they had agreed to a two-week ceasefire barely an hour before President Donald Trump’s deadline to obliterate Iran was set to expire.

Accepting Pakistan’s suggestion of a two-week ceasefire, US President Donald Trump announced a two-week suspension of military action against Iran following discussions with Pakistan’s leadership.
