LAHORE: Pakistan Super League (PSL) is preparing for its biggest geographical expansion yet, with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) opening direct player signings for all eight franchises ahead of the January 23, 2027, auction for the tournament’s 12th edition.

PSL 12 is scheduled to run from March 18 to May 2, 2027, featuring 44 matches over 46 days at five to six venues across Pakistan, according to the roadmap confirmed by the PCB.

The move will give franchises several months to build their squads while creating opportunities for domestic players to earn contracts ahead of the expanded T20 competition.

Direct signings open for eight franchises

Under the announced schedule, franchises have until November 23 to complete their direct signings. Each team will be allowed to sign one marquee player directly, provided the player did not feature in either PSL 10 or PSL 11.

A franchise workshop scheduled for next week will discuss and finalise player retention deadlines, the pre-auction trading window, auction regulations and playing conditions.

The PCB is expected to release further details about these arrangements in the coming weeks, as teams prepare to assemble their squads for the new season.

Domestic T20 tournaments to feed PSL talent pool

The PCB has aligned its domestic cricket calendar with the PSL 12 preparations to strengthen the pathway from domestic cricket to franchise and international competition.

The National T20 Gold and National T20 Silver tournaments will serve as talent-identification events ahead of the player auction. Standout performers are expected to have an opportunity to attract franchise interest and strengthen their prospects of national team selection.

The initiative is intended to connect domestic performances more directly with professional franchise cricket, giving emerging players a platform to showcase their skills before the auction.

PCB promises PSL’s widest geographical reach

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi described the upcoming edition as the league’s most ambitious season yet, saying organisers planned to build on the momentum of PSL 11 by bringing matches to more cities.

“PSL is Pakistan cricket’s biggest stage, and Season 12 will be its most ambitious yet,” Naqvi said, adding that the roadmap would provide franchises, players, commercial partners and broadcasters with greater certainty for planning.

PSL Chief Executive Salman Naseer also highlighted the planned expansion to five or six venues, saying it would bring the tournament closer to fans across Pakistan and give more cities an opportunity to host top-level T20 cricket.

He said the squad-building process had begun, with direct signings, trades and retention decisions expected to shape the teams competing from March.
