Key Points

  • OGDCL has discovered oil and gas at the Bobi Deep-1 well in Sindh’s Sanghar district
  • The well tested at around 2,000 barrels of oil per day and 1.1 million cubic feet of gas per day
  • Discovery marks the first hydrocarbon find from the Massive Sand play in the Bobi and Dhamraki lease area

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s state-owned Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has announced on Wednesday a new petroleum discovery in the southern province of Sindh.

It would add to the country’s domestic energy resources at a time when it is seeking to reduce reliance on imported fuels and strengthen energy security.

The discovery was made at the Bobi Deep-1 exploratory well located within the Bobi and Dhamraki Mining Lease in Sanghar district. The OGDCL operates the block with a 100 per cent working interest.

The company said testing confirmed the presence of commercially viable hydrocarbons in the reservoir.

According to the company, a cased-hole Drill Stem Test conducted on the Massive Sand interval of the Lower Goru Formation produced approximately 2,000 barrels of oil per day and 1.1 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.

The well recorded a flowing wellhead pressure of about 1,050 pounds per square inch during testing.

OGDCL re-entered the Bobi Deep-1 well on May 3, 2026, to evaluate the hydrocarbon potential of the formation.

The well was drilled to a total depth of 3,305 metres into the Sembar Formation using the company’s in-house technical and operational capabilities.

The company described the find as the first hydrocarbon discovery from the Massive Sand play in the Bobi and Dhamraki lease area.

The discovery has established a new exploration play that could reduce geological risk for similar prospects in the surrounding region.

The latest find adds to a series of recent discoveries by OGDCL, Pakistan’s largest exploration and production company, as it intensifies efforts to boost domestic oil and gas output.

The company has been expanding exploration activities across Sindh, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, reinforcing the government’s efforts to narrow the country’s energy supply gap.

Pakistan imports a substantial portion of its energy requirements. Thus, new hydrocarbon discoveries are strategically important for lowering import costs, easing pressure on foreign exchange reserves and improving long-term energy security.

The country has also accelerated exploration activity in both onshore and offshore areas to unlock untapped reserves.

The discovery is expected to strengthen OGDCL’s reserve base and could contribute additional domestic production once development plans are finalised and commercial extraction begins.
