ISLAMABAD:  Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday appreciated the ceasefire agreement reached between the United States and Iran.

The President, in a statement issued by the president house, termed it a timely step that offers space for dialogue, restraint, and a more stable regional environment.

“We did it for the region and in the greater good of humanity at large, when the world was perilously close to a grave disaster,” he remarked, adding that peace remains essential for security, economic stability, and the well-being of people across interconnected regions.

He said Pakistan is proud to have led with wisdom, resolve, and a steadfast commitment to peace, and expressed appreciation for the leadership of Iran and the United States for stepping back from the brink and choosing dialogue over devastation.

He also commended the tireless efforts of the leadership in Washington, Tehran, and Islamabad and Gulf countries, especially Saudi Arabia, in creating the space for de-escalation and diplomacy to prevail.

The President also praised the relentless efforts of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of the Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar for their initiative, leadership, and sustained diplomatic engagement that contributed to advancing Pakistan’s efforts for de-escalation and peace.

The President commended all parties involved for showing pragmatism, flexibility, and statesmanship in reaching this understanding, emphasising that such achievements require strong political will and a readiness to prioritise dialogue over conflict.

He also expressed gratitude to friendly nations, including China, Egypt, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Russia, for their support and constructive efforts in promoting calm and encouraging dialogue during a challenging time.

Additionally, he noted that prayers and goodwill from people around the world reflect a shared human aspiration for peace, stressing that this collective sentiment should continue to inspire leaders to act responsibly.

The President highlighted that the ceasefire provides an important opportunity for the region to recover and move away from the threat of broader conflict.

He reaffirmed that this progress must be strengthened through continued dialogue, confidence-building measures, and a firm commitment to peaceful resolution, reiterating Pakistan’s support for initiatives that promote peace, stability, and mutual respect.

The ceasefire has opened a critical diplomatic window, with Pakistan set to host key negotiations between Washington and Tehran in Islamabad on Friday.

Pakistani officials said delegations from both countries are expected to arrive in the capital for talks aimed at converting the temporary truce into a comprehensive agreement.

The breakthrough came after US President Donald Trump agreed to suspend military action against Iran for two weeks following direct engagement with Pakistan’s leadership.
