Each year, the budget-making exercise starts around the month of February-March and goes on till the end of June every year. During these months, certain employees of various ministries and departments have to put in many extra hours, asking for the due allowance for their services. This time this executive allowance was given to a few departments, and others were left. The protest was lodged by the employees of the Planning Commission, who are involved in the making and execution of development projects.
Government employees protested peacefully yesterday and demanded that they only end the protest if the government announced the allowance.
Employees above grade 17 reached the Finance Ministry to protest for their rights. Officials of the Ministry of Planning, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, and the Foreign Office participated in the protest. Protesters were demanding a 150% executive allowance for federal officers.
Later, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar agreed to meet the employees of the Federal Secretariat. He called the protestors’ delegation for a meeting at 2 pm.
