ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar held a telephonic conversation with Maldives Foreign Minister Dr. Iruthisham Adam, during which the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen bilateral ties.

Dr. Iruthisham Adam is currently in Antigua and Barbuda to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), the Foreign Office statement said.

She expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s warm hospitality during the recent visit of the President of Maldives and his delegation to Islamabad.

“Both Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to building on the understandings reached during the visit and maintaining close engagement to advance bilateral cooperation,” the Foreign Office said.

They also exchanged views on the CHOGM agenda and multilateral cooperation.

Last month, Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu paid a three-day state visit to Pakistan during which the two countries signed 20 MoUs and agreements covering a wide range of areas, including health, education, technical training, tourism, civil aviation, agriculture, fisheries, defence, maritime security, law enforcement, civil service cooperation, social protection, culture and youth development.

They also agreed to increase bilateral trade to $200 million within two years from about $14m, a nearly 15-fold rise.

During the visit, President Muizzu said Maldivian, the Maldives’ national airline, aimed to launch a direct air service between Malé and Karachi soon.

The visit marked the first by a Maldivian president to Pakistan in 11 years, and came as the two countries celebrate the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, established in 1966.
