LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday launched a $200,000 PSL Cricket Development Excellence Award, introducing a new incentive to recognise the franchise making the strongest contribution to the development of cricket beyond the Pakistan Super League.

The inaugural award will assess development work carried out by franchises from HBL PSL 3 through HBL PSL 11, covering the period in which at least six teams participated in the league, the PCB said.

From the 12th edition onward, the award will assess development work undertaken between the two most recent PSL editions.

How the $200,000 award will be decided

The franchises will initially assess their own performance using a scoring model developed by the HBL PSL before submitting their assessments to a five-member committee formed by the PCB.

The committee, comprising independent experts and PCB stakeholders, will verify the scores against supporting evidence and measurable data. This process will account for 80% of the final score.

The remaining 20% will come from fans, who will be invited to vote and rank the franchises’ cricket-development performances through official PSL social media platforms.

The scoring model assigns 25% to player pathway and development, 10% to player impact and match contribution, 15% to high-performance infrastructure and innovation, 20% to grassroots and domestic engagement, 10% to player welfare and education, and 20% to fan voting.

Focus on emerging players and grassroots cricket

The player pathway category will assess how franchises identify uncapped talent, develop players, provide them with opportunities and expose them to cricket beyond the PSL.

The player impact category will examine the progress and contribution of newly scouted players, including their match-winning influence and expansion of roles within their respective franchises.

Infrastructure and innovation will cover facilities, staffing, institutional systems and technology-led initiatives, while the grassroots category will assess programmes involving men’s and women’s cricket, coaching clinics for children, school and club cricket and participation in PCB-organised competitions.

The player welfare and education component will examine initiatives such as financial literacy, educational support, mental health systems, media training, anti-doping and anti-corruption education and career-transition planning.
