ISLAMABAD: Ambassador Asif Durrani, Special Envoy on Afghanistan, has been removed from his position, local media reported on Saturday.
An official notification states that Asif Ali Durrani will be relieved of his responsibilities as Special Envoy on Afghanistan in Management Position (MP-1) with effect from 10 September, 2024, according to the local media.
Asif Ali Durrani had replaced Ambassador (retd) Muhammad Sadiq as special representative on Afghanistan in May 2023. The special envoy for Afghanistan, a position created in June 2020 following the US-Taliban Doha Accord.

It is not clear who will succeed Durrani as special envoy for Afghanistan. According to the Express Tribune, relations with Afghanistan has become a challenge since the return of Taliban in August 2021. Since then, the number of terrorist attacks went up in recent times in Pakistan. Islamabad said that the Fitna al-Khwarij (TTP) hideouts across the border as the main source of trouble in its country. Pakistan has repeatedly urged the Taliban government in Afghanistan to tackle the threat. However, Afghan Taliban is reluctant to act against the Fitna al-Khwarij terrorists and its affiliates in Afghanistan.
