ISLAMABAD: Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Ambassador Suljuk Mustansar Tarar has been elected as chairperson of the 28th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and their Destruction.
His tenure in this role will extend for one year. The chairmanship is rotated among the five regional groups in the Conference of States Parties (CSP), and Ambassador Suljuk Mustansar Tarar’s candidacy was proposed by the Asia Group to the 193-member conference.
The Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, and Stockpiling of Chemical Weapons and their Destruction (CWC), boasting 193 States Parties, stands as a comprehensive disarmament treaty, eliminating an entire class of weapons of mass destruction.
The Conference of States Parties, encompassing all states parties to the CWC, serves as the principal organ overseeing the Convention’s implementation.
Pakistan takes great pride in its election to this prestigious position, marking the first time the country has assumed the role of Chair for the Hague-based Conference of States Parties of the Chemical Weapons Convention. This achievement underscores the confidence of states parties in Pakistan’s diplomacy and commitment to the CWC. —APP
