ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has strongly condemned the storming and vandalism of the Consulate General of Kuwait in the Iraqi city of Basra.

“Pakistan strongly condemns such acts, which are inconsistent with established diplomatic norms and international law, particularly the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations,” the Foreign Office said in a statement on Wednesday.

Pakistan underscored the importance of ensuring the security and inviolability of diplomatic and consular missions. It also called for a thorough investigation into the incident and for those responsible to be brought to justice.

Furthermore, Pakistan expressed its full solidarity with the government and people of Kuwait and reaffirmed its principled position on respect for diplomatic missions and adherence to international obligations.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, and Bahrain also condemned the incident.

According to a statement issued by the foreign ministry, Saudi Arabia denounced the act and stressed that it was the responsibility of states to “ensure the full protection of members of consular missions and their premises, in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations of 1963”.

The UAE stressed the importance of safeguarding diplomatic premises, missions, and their personnel in line with international law and established norms, according to a statement from its foreign ministry.

Qatar described the incident as a “flagrant violation of international law and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.”

In a statement, the country’s foreign ministry underscored the importance of respecting the sanctity of diplomatic missions and ensuring full protection for their premises and personnel.

Kuwait summons Iraqi envoy

Earlier, Kuwait summoned Iraq’s charge d’affaires following an overnight attempt by protesters to storm the Kuwaiti consulate in the southern Iraqi city of Basra.

In a statement, Kuwait’s foreign ministry said it had delivered a formal note of protest over “acts of vandalism and destruction that targeted the Kuwaiti Consulate General in Basra,” describing the incident as a “flagrant violation of relevant international norms.”

On Tuesday, dozens of demonstrators had gathered outside the Kuwaiti consulate in Basra. The protest followed projectile attacks the same day that killed an eight-year-old child and at least six other people, according to Iraqi officials. One official said the strikes had been launched from Kuwait.
