PESHAWAR, Pakistan: Pakistan’s Army on Tuesday night said it had “responded fiercely” to unprovoked firing by Afghan Taliban and banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) terrorists along the Pak-Afghan border in Kurram district, days after deadly cross-border clashes left dozens dead on both sides.
According to Pakistani security sources, Afghan Taliban and TTP terrorists based in Afghanistan opened unprovoked fire on Pakistani border posts on Tuesday night.
Pakistani troops stationed at the border posts returned fire “with full force,” targeting multiple Afghan Taliban positions across the border in Afghanistan, security sources said.
“The response inflicted heavy losses, destroying several firing posts and a Taliban tank,” security sources said, adding that the Taliban fighters were forced to retreat.
“Afghan Taliban and Fitna al-Khawarij opened unprovoked fire in Kurram. Pakistani Army responded with full force and intensity,” state broadcaster PTV News reported, quoting security sources on X.
Fitna-al-Khawarij is a term the state uses for terrorists belonging to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan.
It added that Taliban regime posts suffered heavy damage and a tank caught fire after being hit, with Taliban fighters fleeing from their posts.

Weekend assault repelled with heavy casualties
The latest aggression follows a major assault over the weekend, when Afghan Taliban fighters and allied terrorist groups launched coordinated attacks along multiple sectors of the Pak-Afghan border on the night of 11–12 October.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Pakistan’s military swiftly repelled the assault “decisively,” inflicting heavy casualties on the attackers.
The operation involved precision strikes and ground raids on Taliban camps and terrorist training facilities inside Afghan territory, ISPR said in a statement issued on Sunday.

“Exercising the right of self-defence, the alert Armed Forces of Pakistan repelled the assault decisively all along the border and inflicted heavy casualties,” the ISPR statement said.
Intelligence assessments shared by the military indicated that more than 200 Taliban fighters and terrorists were killed, while 21 Taliban positions across the border were briefly captured and several training camps were rendered inoperative.
The military said every effort was made to avoid collateral damage and ensure the safety of civilians in border areas.

US, China offer to help de-escalate
Pakistan has repeatedly called on the Taliban to bar terrorist groups from using Afghanistan’s territory to attack Pakistan; however, the Afghan Taliban denies the allegations and claims Afghan soil is not used for attacks on neighbouring countries.
US President Donald Trump and China offered to help de-escalate tensions between Islamabad and Kabul.
The minister also said that hostilities between the two sides can resume “at any time”. “We can not rule that out, but there is certainly a lull in hostilities.”
