BEIRUT: The United Nations said on Wednesday that over 90,000 people had been displaced in Lebanon this week, as Israel pounds what it says are Hezbollah positions across the country and the Lebanese group attacks Israel, leading to widespread chaos and humanitarian concerns.

According to the UN’s International Organization for Migration, there have been “90,530 newly displaced persons” recorded since the start of the week. Many of these people are among the more than 111,000 people who have been displaced since October, with a significant number likely experiencing secondary displacement due to the ongoing Israeli violence.

The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that the situation has reached alarming levels, especially after a series of Israeli raids on Monday, which killed at least 558 people—the deadliest day of violence in Lebanon. These strikes have sent thousands fleeing for their lives, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis in the region.

Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib said on Tuesday that the total number of displaced people in Lebanon is “now probably approaching half a million.”
