OIC Secretary-General Affirms Commitment to Defend Muslim Women Rights

JEDDAH: Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has affirmed his commitment to the defend the rights of the Muslim women, an OIC statement said on Monday.

Mr. Hissein Brahim Taha made the remarks while addressing a 3-day International Conference on Women in Islam in Jeddah under the patronage of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Muslim women leading delegations from different states and others with high-level positions in the Islamic world, and representatives of the Member States and experts attended the conference.

Mr. Hissein Brahim Taha said that since its inception, the OIC has devoted itself to the promotion of the rights and empowerment of Muslim women.

The conference also adopted the OIC Program of Action for the Advancement of Women (OPAAW), widely regarded as a roadmap in Muslim societies.

Mr. Brahim Taha in his remarks stated that this Conference is being held at a time when the Palestinians are facing brutal Israeli aggression, and women, particularly Gazan women, as well as children, older people, and other innocent civilians, are among the victims of this bombardment.

He added the most significant number of victims, who are being killed in the midst of a state of silence, constitute the weakest link in this tragedy.

He stressed that the situation in Gaza is a continuing tragedy adding that it is our responsibility to intensify efforts to expose the Israeli barbarism and protect the rights of Palestinian women, the Palestinian people, and Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The Secretary-General also expressed the OIC’s resolve to continue constructive dialogue to empower Afghan women and ensure their right to access education at all levels and participate in public life.

He indicated that the Conference will remain a beacon light in the OIC and participating bodies’ history for promoting women’s rights in Islam, adding that the Conference will adopt the Jeddah Document on Women’s Rights in Islam.

He thanked Saudi Arabia for hosting the Conference and thanked all the participating women figures.

Prime Minister of Bangladesh, several foreign ministers, ministers of women and family affairs from the OIC Member States delivered speeches while female participants and invitees delivered research papers.
