New York: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has strongly criticised Israel’s interception of a humanitarian aid flotilla bound for Gaza, describing the operation as a violation of international law and calling for the immediate release of those detained.

In a statement shared on social media, Mamdani said that Israeli forces boarded the vessel in international waters near the Greek island of Crete.

The flotilla, which was reportedly carrying humanitarian assistance for Gaza, was stopped during the operation, prompting widespread concern over the legality and humanitarian implications of the move.

The mayor highlighted that more than 175 individuals were taken into custody during the interception.

Among those detained, he noted, were several residents of New York City, raising the urgency of the situation for local authorities in the United States.

Mamdani stated that his office is actively coordinating with both state and federal officials to gather verified information regarding the individuals involved.

He added that efforts are underway to determine the exact whereabouts and conditions of the detained New Yorkers, underscoring the seriousness with which his administration is treating the matter.

Describing the incident as a “brazen violation of international law”, Mamdani stressed that the detention of civilians participating in a humanitarian mission cannot be justified.

He reiterated his demand for the immediate release of all those held, emphasising the need to uphold international legal standards and protect humanitarian efforts.

The interception of the flotilla has drawn attention amid ongoing tensions surrounding Gaza, with international observers closely monitoring developments and responses from global leaders.
