RIO DE JANEIRO: Brazilians have demanded that strict measures should be taken against those who stormed government buildings in Brazil’s capital Sunday. Thousands of people staged protest demonstrations against the attack on parliament, the Supreme court, and the presidency in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

Bety Amin, a 61-year-old therapist told the media that the attackers and their leaders should be punished. He claimed that they (rioters) do not represent the country but “we are the real representatives of Brazil”.

Another protestor Marcos Gama said that they want to react and need to go to the roads after what happened in the capital.

Luis Felipe Miguel, a teacher at the University of Brasilia, wrote in a column entitled “No Amnesty”. He wrote that it is the lesson they should have learned from the end of the dictatorship when the country opted not to punish the regime’s torturers and killers.”

Brazilians and Democracy

Pro-democracy Brazilians want to confirm their message “No amnesty!” will be followed by both the far-right elements and law enforcement authorities who might defy democracy again.

Brazilian police on Monday had arrested roughly fifteen hundred rioters. Local media reported that hundreds of sick and elderly detainees were released Tuesday following they were questioned. The police’s press office told the AP that they plan to indict as many as 1,000 people.
