BRISBANE: In a stunning upset at the Women’s World Cup, Nigeria secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over co-hosts Australia on Thursday, leaving the home team in danger of an early exit from the tournament. The electric match in front of 49,156 passionate Australian fans in Brisbane witnessed Nigeria’s remarkable comeback to top Group B, while Australia now faces a must-win final group game against Canada to advance to the last 16.

The first half ended with both teams level at 1-1, thanks to two stoppage-time goals. However, Nigeria came out strong in the second half, with Osinachi Ohale heading home to give her team the lead in the 65th minute, capitalizing on an Australian goalkeeper’s parry. Asisat Oshoala, who came on as a substitute after half-time, then took advantage of a defensive mix-up and fired a goal from an acute angle to extend Nigeria’s lead.

Prominent Victory for Nigeria

Australia fought back with a goal from Alanna Kennedy in the 10th minute of stoppage time, but Nigeria held on to secure a famous victory. The win for Nigeria was highly improbable after Australia dominated the first half, controlling the game but struggling to break down the resilient Nigerian defense.

Despite Australia’s efforts, Nigeria frustrated both them and Olympic champions Canada in their previous match with a solid defensive display. Australia’s injured star player, Sam Kerr, was sorely missed as they lacked the penetration needed to capitalize on their dominance in the first half.

The thrilling encounter showcased Nigeria’s determination and resilience, as they managed to equalize just before the break through Uchenna Kanu after Rasheedat Ajibade’s shot deflected into her path. The second half remained more balanced, but Australia could not find a breakthrough after Nigeria’s two-goal lead.

The loss puts Australia in a challenging position, needing a victory against Canada to secure a spot in the knockout stages. Meanwhile, Nigeria sits at the top of Group B and will face Ireland in their final group match, with Ireland already eliminated from contention.
