SEOUL: N Korea has launched a “new tactical nuclear attack submarine”, official media reported on Friday. According to news agency KNSA North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un also attended the launching ceremony.
“The submarine-launching ceremony signaled the start of a new chapter for boosting up the naval force of the DPRK,” KCNA reported, using the initials of North Korea’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

According to KCNA, Kim Jong Un presided over the opening ceremony, adding the new sub-submarine was part of a “push forward with the nuclear weaponization of the Navy forces in the future”,.
The US and South Korea have ramped up defence and military cooperation in reply, conducting joint military drills with advanced jets and the United States strategic assets.
N Korea has carried out a record number of arms tests in the current year, and last month failed in its 2nd effort to put a spy satellite into orbit.

Washington and Tokyo condemned North Korea’s attempted spy satellite launch. In a statement, the White House denounced North Korea’s attempted launch and termed it a violation of the United Nations Security Council resolutions. The US National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said that even though the attempt of North Korea failed but it was “a violation of UNSC resolutions. She added, “It increases tensions, and also risks destabilizing the regional security situation,”.
Similarly, Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida also condemned North Korea’s attempted satellite launch. Fumio Kishida told the media persons, “By broadly measuring all factors, we have confirmed and consider it a failure. However, the Prime Minister said that this was the violation of the UN resolutions and “we are already firmly protesting.”
