ISLAMABAD: Myanmar carried out an airstrike on a prominent training camp for pro-democracy forces close to its shared border with India, with jets dropping at least two bombs inside Indian territory. However, there were no reports of human loss on the Indian side.
The Myanmar junta, which seized power in a military coup in February 2021 and is engaged in a bloody war to crush pro-democracy insurgents, launched a strike on Camp Victoria in the Chin state of Myanmar on Tuesday afternoon, the Guardian reported on Wednesday.
The camp is known as the headquarters of the ethnic armed group Chin National Army (CNA) which is fighting alongside other rebel outfits to restore democracy in the country, under the banner of People’s Defence Force (PDF). The camp is located just a few kilometers from the shared border with the Indian state of Mizoram.
Jets drop multiple bombs on Camp Victoria
The jets dropped multiple bombs on the camp, generating panic in the area. Some warplanes crossed over the Tiau River, which serves as the border between Myanmar and India.
Seven rebel fighters including a woman were killed and over 20 people were injured in the aerial bombing on Camp Victoria. The slain rebels were identified as Salai Duh Tin, Salai Van Ro Piang, Salai Kil Mang, Mai Sui Len Par and Mai Ngun Hlei Par.
There was no immediate comment from the Indian government or the military.
Aerial bombings have become a common tactic by Myanmar’s junta, especially in areas controlled by ethnic rebel forces, as the junta continues a ruthless and bloody campaign of violence to establish its power.
In October 2022, at least eighty people were killed when the military carried out an airstrike on a concert in Kachin, a northern state of Myanmar.
