SOWETE, South Africa: The brick tower at the Walter Sisulu Freedom Square in Kliptown, Soweto, was erected as a tribute to the Freedom Charter for post-apartheid South Africa. The site which was inscribed last year on UNESCO’s heritage list is now in a “decaying state” and “getting worse by the day” says local resident, Sphamandla Matyeni. This as the nation gets ready to mark the 70th anniversary of this founding text.
