ROSARIO, Argentina: Jorge Messi, the father of Argentine football star Lionel Messi, was buried in a private family ceremony in Rosario on Sunday, according to Argentine media reports.

The 68-year-old was laid to rest at El Prado cemetery on the outskirts of Rosario in Santa Fe province.

Lionel Messi, his wife Antonela Roccuzzo and other close family members attended the funeral, which was held under strict privacy and security measures.

Journalists, police officers and Messi supporters gathered outside the cemetery as fans brought flowers, letters and other gifts to pay their respects to Jorge Messi.

Fans Remember Messi’s Father

Jorge Messi played an important role in his son’s life and career, serving not only as his father but also as his manager during the early stages of Lionel Messi’s rise to football stardom.

The family has not publicly disclosed the cause of his death.

Argentina’s Clarín newspaper reported that Jorge Messi had been receiving cancer treatment and had spent several months receiving medical care in a hospital, including during the 2026 World Cup.

His health had drawn public attention after Lionel Messi broke down in tears following a goal against Algeria during the tournament, with the emotional moment linked to concerns about his father’s condition.

Rosario House Becomes Memorial

The modest two-storey house in Rosario where Lionel Messi was born has effectively become a memorial.

Fans have left flowers, letters, banners and gifts outside the house, which has been decorated with Argentine flags and messages of support for the football star.

Rosario is about 300km (186 miles) north-west of Buenos Aires.
