Manchester Woman Becomes First in World to Receive Successful Ovarian Cancer Therapy

Tracy Tomlinson, 58, becomes first patient to receive experimental 'off-the-shelf' treatment that could revolutionise care for ovarian, lung, and head and neck cancers.

MANCHESTER, UK: In a development being hailed as a turning point in cancer treatment, a 58-year-old woman with advanced ovarian cancer has become the first patient in the world to receive a groundbreaking new therapy.

Tracy Tomlinson, who was diagnosed with the disease in 2020, was administered the experimental drug ZI-MA4-1 at the Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester as part of a clinical trial that could offer hope to thousands of patients with limited survival options.

Only around 15 percent of women survive ovarian cancer for five years or more after diagnosis. Mrs Tomlinson, who has previously undergone surgery and multiple rounds of chemotherapy only to see her cancer return, said she decided “almost straight away” to participate in the trial after learning last year that she was a suitable candidate.

“If it benefits me, absolutely fantastic. But if it benefits other people in the future, that’s important too,” she said. “I don’t want to have gone through everything I’ve gone through for nothing. I want to feel like I have made a difference.”

A ‘landmark moment’ in cancer care

The treatment, developed by Norwegian biotech company Zelluna, represents a significant departure from conventional cancer therapies. ZI-MA4-1 harnesses the body’s natural killer (NK) cells, specialist immune cells that destroy abnormal cells, and engineers them to recognise and target tumours producing a protein called Mage-A4, which is found in several types of cancer.

Unlike personalised treatments that must be individually tailored to each patient, this therapy is designed as an “off-the-shelf” solution. It uses immune cells from healthy donors, with hundreds of doses manufactured in advance from a single production batch. Experts believe this approach could make advanced cell therapies available to more patients more quickly and at a lower cost.

Dr Jon Kim, consultant medical oncologist at the Christie, explained: “Mrs Tomlinson is essentially getting somebody else’s immune cells that have been engineered to ‘see’ her cancer.”

Trial offers hope for patients with few options

The clinical trial will evaluate the therapy not only for ovarian cancer but also for lung cancer, sarcomas, and head and neck cancers, conditions for which many patients have few remaining treatment options.

Professor Fiona Thistlethwaite, consultant medical oncologist at the Christie, described the development as an “exciting step forward,” while acknowledging that it remains an early-stage study requiring further evaluation.

Namir Hassan, CEO of Zelluna, called Mrs Tomlinson’s first dose a “landmark moment,” adding that the therapy could offer “a new potential treatment option for patients facing advanced cancers with limited alternatives.”

‘Why can’t I still be here in 15 years?’

Despite the gravity of her diagnosis, Mrs Tomlinson remains resolutely optimistic. Reflecting on living with ovarian cancer, she said: “Every day that I wake up is a positive. You’ve got to have hope.”

She continued: “I often think, ‘I’m still here’, and that’s helped me think, ‘Why can’t I still be here in 10 years?’, ‘Why can’t I still be here in 15 years?’ And I believe taking all the treatments offered to me is helping me kick that can a bit further down the road.”

Her determination is shared by the medical team at the Christie, one of Europe’s largest cancer centres, which has been at the forefront of numerous breakthroughs in oncology.

A new era for cancer treatment?

Last month, a new ovarian cancer treatment was approved for use on the NHS for the first time in 20 years, a sign of accelerating progress in the field. The arrival of ZI-MA4-1, with its potential to be mass-produced and readily available, could herald a new era in immunotherapy, making cutting-edge cell-based treatments accessible to far more patients.

For Mrs Tomlinson, the trial represents more than just a personal chance at survival. “I don’t want to go anywhere,” she said. “I’ve still got a lot of things I want to do and things I want to achieve.”
