ISLAMABAD: A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck several cities of Pakistan, including Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar, on Saturday night. The quake’s epicentre was near the Tajikistan and Afghanistan border, with a depth of 196 kilometres in the Hindukush mountain range, according to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre, Islamabad.
The earthquake caused panic among residents, prompting them to rush out of their homes. However, as of now, there have been no reported damages or casualties from the tremor.
The affected cities also included Bannu, DI Khan, Swat, Diamer, Chilas, Nowshera, Mansehra, Lower Dir, Upper Dir, Mianwali, and Malakand. Additionally, strong tremors were felt in India’s Delhi and neighboring areas, including some parts of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and Punjab.
Earthquakes in Pakistan
Earthquakes are not uncommon in Pakistan due to its geographical location on the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The Indian plate’s northward push into the Eurasian plate makes large parts of South Asia seismically active.
