PARIS: President of France Emmanuel Macron on Sunday told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that any forced displacement of people from Rafah city in Gaza would constitute a war crime.

He also expressed his strong opposition to any Israeli military offensive in Rafah, where majority of the population of Gaza is taking shelter after months of intense fighting in the besieged enclave.

Since October 7, Israel’s air and ground offensive into Gaza has resulted in the killing of at least 32,226 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and 74,518 injuries, with 84 casualties reported in the past 24 hours alone, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

In a telephone call with Netanyahu on Sunday, Macron strongly denounced Israel’s declaration of the seizure of 800 hectares of land in the occupied West Bank for the expansion of new Jewish settlements.

Activists say Israel’s announcement that the land in the northern Jordan Valley is now state land is the single biggest such seizure in decades.

In the call, Macron told Netanyahu he wanted to bring a draft resolution to the UN Security Council stressing for an immediate and lasting ceasefire.

Macron asks Israel to open all crossing points in Gaza

He also asked Israel to immediately open all crossing points into Gaza. The planned Rafah ground operation has faced intense global pressure, with warnings it would cause mass civilian casualties and deepen the humanitarian crisis.

However, Israel has dismissed all calls saying it is necessary in the conflict with Hamas.

Israel has faced mounting global opposition to its military campaign as Palestinian civilian deaths have increased and its siege has brought widespread hunger and malnutrition.

Meanwhile, US Vice President Kamala Harris has warned that any attack by Israel on Rafah, would be a grave mistake.

She opposed the killing of innocent Palestinians, affirming the right of both Israelis and Palestinians to live in equal dignity and security.
