Landslide Kills 21 in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Officials said on Friday that a landslide killed as many as 21 people, including children when they were sleeping in their tents at an unlicensed campsite in Malaysia.

Reports said that the landslide in the Selangor state on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur took place about 3am on Friday morning. The landslide tore down a hillside hitting an organic farm with camping facilities, according to Reuters.

Authorities said that more than 90 people were caught in the landslide and of them, 59 had been found safe while dozens were still missing. According to messages on social media, the fire department said that in addition to the 12 deaths, eight injured had been hospitalized.

District police chief Suffian Abdullah said that the dead people were all Malaysians and included a child aged about five years. Local television footage showed the aftermath of the landslide through a steep and forested area near a road.
