SEOUL, South Korea: Two hundred and fifty new ballistic missile launchers have been sent to frontline units along the southern border by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who has personally overseen their deployment. The weapons are described as a “powerful treasured sword” for preserving the nation’s sovereignty.

The ceremony, reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), took place in Pyongyang and was marked by Kim’s personal involvement in both the design and presentation of the launchers.

This latest move comes as relations between North and South Korea have deteriorated significantly. The North has intensified its weapons testing and engaged in provocative actions, including sending balloons filled with trash into South Korea.

In response, South Korea has resumed propaganda broadcasts, suspended military agreements, and restarted live-fire drills near the border.

Kim’s address highlighted the timing of the weapon’s presentation as a demonstration of North Korea’s commitment to strengthening its defence capabilities despite recent flood damage. Heavy rainfall in late July reportedly caused significant destruction, with South Korean media estimating up to 1,500 deaths. North Korea has dismissed these reports as part of a smear campaign and claimed extensive flood damage was minimal, with a swift rescue operation saving over 5,000 people.
