WASHINGTON: US Vice President Kamala Harris has launched her election campaign with a blistering personal assault on Donald Trump and expressed resolve to win in November despite the “rollercoaster” of Biden’s shock exit.
As she closed in on the Democratic party’s nomination with the support of a batch of leaders and massive voter donations, Kamala Harris lashed out at Donald Trump in her first speech to campaign workers since President Biden’s announcement Sunday.
Kamala Harris Receives Support of Democratic Delegates to Win her Party’s presidential Nomination
She has received the support of enough Democratic delegates to win her party’s presidential nomination, CNN reported late Monday. She will need the support of around 1,976 pledged delegates out of 4,000 in order to decisively secure the Democratic presidential nomination during an official vote in the coming weeks, a number which US media reported she has now surpassed.
Aiming to become the first female president in US history, Harris won the backing of a seemingly irrefutable number of Democrats.
Particularly among them was powerful ex-speaker Nancy Pelosi, who said she recommended Kamala Harris “with immense pride and boundless optimism.”
Donors have also rallied behind Harris, pouring a record $81 million into her election campaign in the 24 hours following Biden stood aside.
The campaign has claimed the haul was the largest one-day sum in presidential history — and that, among the 888,000 public donors, around 60 percent were making their first 2024 contribution.
Biden, meanwhile made his first public speech for nearly a week as the President recovers from a session of Covid-19.
“We are going to win in November,” Kamala Harris told workers in her fiery speech at campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware. The Vice President said she had gone to the Wilmington office to address them personally following the “rollercoaster” of the last few days.
Turning her fire on Trump, she has referred to her past role as California’s chief prosecutor, saying she “took on culprits of all types.”
“Hunters who abused women. Fraudsters who ripped off consumers. Cheaters who broke the rules for their person gain. So, hear me when I say I know Trump’s type,” Kamala Harris said to applause.
She also promised to focus on the politically explosive matter of abortion, following Trump welcomed the Supreme Court’s 2022 verdict to overturn the long-held federal right to the procedure.
President Biden dropped out on Sunday and also endorsed his deputy after three weeks of intensifying pressure, triggered by a catastrophic debate performance against Donald Trump.
