TEHRAN: Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has formally acknowledged Pakistan and Qatar for their diplomatic efforts in facilitating peace negotiations between Tehran and Washington, as it announced the finalisation of a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending months of conflict.

In a statement released on Sunday, the council said the text of the agreement, referred to as the “Islamabad negotiations”, was finalised on June 14 following several months of intensive talks.

The statement described the development as a significant diplomatic achievement and expressed gratitude to Pakistan and Qatar for their constructive role in supporting the peace process.

According to the statement, all military operations and hostilities on various fronts, including Lebanon, will cease immediately and permanently beginning tonight. It also announced the immediate and complete lifting of the naval blockade imposed on Iran.

The council said the memorandum of understanding would be formally signed on June 19, while negotiations on a broader and final agreement would continue after the implementation of commitments outlined in the initial accord.

The statement credited Iran’s leadership, armed forces and public support for reaching the understanding, while emphasising that the process had been conducted under the supervision of the country’s highest national security authorities.

Pakistan has played a central role in diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and encouraging dialogue between the United States and Iran. Islamabad hosted key rounds of talks and remained actively engaged in facilitating communication between the two sides throughout the negotiation process.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently said Pakistan was working closely with all stakeholders to help secure a lasting settlement, expressing confidence that the peace initiative could lay the foundation for long-term regional stability.

The acknowledgement by Iran’s top security body is being viewed as a significant diplomatic endorsement of Pakistan’s mediation efforts and its growing role in promoting peace and dialogue in the region.

Analysts say the announcement marks an important step towards de-escalation after months of uncertainty and conflict, while highlighting the value of diplomacy and regional cooperation in addressing complex international disputes.

The formal signing of the memorandum later this week is expected to be closely watched by regional and international stakeholders as hopes rise for a durable peace framework and greater stability across the Middle East.
