WASHINGTON:  US President Donald Trump has said that Iran’s offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is simply not enough.

“The Iranians made an offer regarding the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. I have seen some aspects of it, but not all of it, and it is simply not enough,” Trump said in an interview with Time magazine.

Asked why he rejected the proposal, the US president said, “Because things that I wouldn’t have approved a year ago I wouldn’t have today.”

“There was always a threat they had, and it worked for a little while. But we basically closed it on them. You know, they said we’re going to close. I said, ‘Well, you close it, you’re going to have big trouble.’ We took it over,” he said.

We have a Lot of Weapons: Trump

President Trump also rejected reports that the country’s munition stockpiles are running low, telling Time magazine that Washington has “a lot of weapons” and dismissing a Department of War report warning of shortages as “mostly fake news”.

Trump said the US had been “stocking up for the last six months” and was in “great shape”, despite his predecessor Joe Biden having sent munitions to Ukraine.

“We’re also now stocking up big and making [munitions] — and we’re keeping it,” Trump said, adding that the US would provide weapons to its allies when necessary.

Asked which parts of the Pentagon report were accurate, Trump acknowledged that “some forms of ammunition are a little bit lower than others”, while saying the US had middle- and upper-middle-grade munitions.

“So now we have Raytheon. We have all of them,” he adds, referring to defence contractors manufacturing ammunition. “They’re going. They’re building plants all over the country, and they’re doing a lot. They’re working 24/7, and we’re stocking up at levels we’ve never done before.”

Annihilation of Iran possible

In response to a question about his claims that the US will “annihilate” Iran, President Trump has replied that it is possible.

Trump made the remarks about destroying the country during his recent address to the UN General Assembly.

“Yeah, I would do that. It’s possible,” he tells Time magazine in an interview, calling himself the “president of peace” in response to another question.

Asked how a “president of peace” could justify annihilating Iran, Trump says, “Because by annihilating Iran, we’ve created peace in the world. With Iran, I don’t think you could ever have peace.”

He also said that bombing the country is “possible” after the midterms, without providing specific details. “I can’t tell you that because look, you know, you’re asking, where are you going to bomb?” Trump added.

US forces redirect 125 vessels

Earlier, US Central Command (Centcom) said that as part of Washington’s blockade of Iranian ports, 125 commercial vessels have been redirected.

“As of Sept. 30, CENTCOM forces have redirected 125 commercial vessels to ensure strict compliance,” CENTCOM said in a post on X.

Pakistan urges restraint in US-Iran war

The Foreign Office spokesperson, Sajjad Haider Khan, has said that Pakistan is a responsible member of the international community and shall continue to adhere to all applicable sanctions regimes.

The spokesperson was responding to a query about the US announcing sanctions against 13 individuals and entities, including one based in Pakistan, alleging they helped Iran procure weapons.

“Pakistan reaffirms its commitment to the rules-based system, rooted in multilateralism and international law,” he said during a weekly FO briefing.

He added that Pakistan, as a mediator, urges both sides — the United States and Iran — to exercise restraint.
