BEIRUT: A series of airstrikes in eastern Syria on Tuesday killed 15 people including an Iranian military adviser and a World Health Organization (WHO) team member, officials and reports say.

The airstrikes, which occurred in Syria’s Deir el-Zour province bordering Iraq, claimed the lives of 15 people, including an Iranian Revolutionary Guard adviser, two bodyguards, nine Iraqi fighters, three Syrians including an engineer.

While the origin of the airstrikes remains unclear, Iran’s state news agency confirmed the death of a Revolutionary Guard member in Syria. Pro-government media outlet Dama Post reported that the strikes targeted Deir el-Zour city, as well as the towns of Mayadeen and Boukamal, killing 20 people including women and children.

The World Health Organization confirmed the death of one of its team members, engineer Emad Shehab, who served as a focal point for water, sanitation, and hygiene in the province since 2022.

No group has claimed responsibility for the airstrikes. Although Israel frequently conducts strikes in Syria, but rarely acknowledges them.

In neighboring Lebanon, reports of an Israeli airstrike in the village of Zboud in Hermel region were also reported.

The strike allegedly targeted a military complex used by Hezbollah’s aerial unit, according to Israel’s army spokesperson Avichay Adraee.
