ISLAMABAD/TEHRAN: The judiciary said Monday that Iran’s government has sentenced to death three people accused of killing three members of the armed forces during the protests triggered by death of Mahsa Amini.
The Islamic Republic has been rocked by civil unrest since the September 16 death of Kurdish woman Amini, 22, following her arrest for allegedly violating Iran strict dress code for women.
Death sentences
The latest sentence, which can still be appealed, brings to 17 the total number of citizens condemned to death in connection with more than three months of protests. Four of those convicted were executed and two others are on death row after their sentences were upheld by the country’s supreme court.
Saleh Mirhashemi, Saeed Yaghoubi, and Majid Kazemi were sentenced to death on charges of “moharebeh” and waging “war against God,” the judiciary’s Mizan Online news website reported.
Mizan said that two others were handed prison terms for the incident that led to the deaths of three armed force members in the central province of Isfahan on November 16. All the sentences were appealed before the Iran supreme court.
