TEL AVIV/TEHRAN: Air raid sirens sounded across Israel on Sunday as the military said it intercepted multiple waves of Iranian missiles, marking the first such attack since an April 8 ceasefire agreement to halt the Middle East war.

The Iranian missile launches came hours after Israel struck Beirut’s southern suburbs in an attack that killed at least two people and wounded 20 others, according to Lebanon’s health ministry.

The Israeli military said its air defence systems were actively intercepting incoming missile salvos launched from Iran.

The Home Front Command ordered schools across the country to close on Monday, saying all educational activities were suspended following a nationwide security assessment.

“Following an assessment of the situation, the Home Front Command has decided to modify the instructions and place the entire country under a restricted activity level,” the command said in a statement.

It added: “No educational activities may be conducted.”

Iranian missiles were reportedly launched in multiple waves, with Israeli authorities saying they were still assessing the scale of the attack.

Beirut strike kills at least two

Earlier on Sunday, Israel struck the southern suburbs of Beirut, targeting a Hezbollah command centre in the Dahiyeh district, a stronghold of Hezbollah.

Lebanon’s health ministry said the strike killed two people and wounded 20, including four children and four women.

“The Israeli enemy’s airstrike on the Mreijeh area in the southern suburbs of Beirut resulted in two martyrs and 20 wounded,” the ministry said in a statement.

Lebanon’s National News Agency said the strike hit two apartments in two buildings.

The Israeli military said it had intercepted rockets fired from Lebanon towards northern Israel earlier on Sunday.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the strike on Beirut was carried out “in response to Hezbollah’s fire towards Israeli territory”.

Hezbollah confirmed it had launched missiles and drones targeting Israeli military positions in northern Israel.

Iran warns of further escalation

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned Israel against further strikes in Lebanon.

“If the crimes in the Dahieh area of Beirut expand, we will attack targets in the occupied territories,” the IRGC joint command said.

General Ali Abdollahi, head of Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya central military command, said Israel had “crossed all red lines” with the Beirut strike.

He warned Israel to halt its operations in Lebanon or face “more devastating and regrettable blows”.

Iranian Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf accused the United States of giving a “green light” to the Beirut attack and said US and Israeli assets were now “legitimate targets”.

Pakistan continues diplomatic efforts

Despite the fighting, diplomatic contacts continued over the weekend.

Pakistan-mediated indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran are ongoing as Islamabad intensifies diplomatic efforts to permanently end the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited Tehran on Saturday.

On Sunday, Naqvi met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran.

The interior minister’s visit comes amid renewed tensions between Israel, Washington and Tehran, with recent tit-for-tat attacks threatening the ceasefire, in place since April 8.

Lebanese army chief Rodolphe Haykal also travelled to Pakistan for talks with Pakistan’s Chief of Defemce Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, according to Lebanese military.

Trump says ‘very close’ to signing deal with Iran

US President Donald Trump has said in an interview with NBC News that Washington is “very close” to reaching a peace deal.

Trump said that the two sides are “very close” to signing a deal, but indicated he is seeking additional restrictions to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon by any means.

“We have a couple of points. They don’t even seem like big points… They’ve conceded the fact that they will not have nuclear weapons. We had a clause in there that [they] will not develop nuclear weapons,” the US President said.

The US President said that the US will seize and destroy Iran’s highly enriched uranium, either with or without Tehran’s cooperation.

“We’ll take it out and destroy it, whether it’s on-site or whether we take it off-site,” he said in an interview on the NBC News programme ‘Meet the Press’.

“He adds that he wants to keep US troops in the Middle East until “completion”, further stating he doesn’t “consider them in danger”.

The US President said that he would not unfreeze Iranian assets or lift any sanctions before a peace deal is reached between Washington and Tehran.

Trump said he would consider those steps after an agreement is done. “Comes after,” he said. “Yeah. If they behave, if they do a good job, we start talking. Yeah.”

Trump also said that he was not demanding that Lebanon be a part of a short-term deal with Tehran.
