KABUL: Iran has executed nearly 190 Afghan nationals since the beginning of 2024, according to figures compiled by human rights organisations.
At least 80 Afghan citizens were executed in Iran in 2024, followed by 84 in 2025 and another 23 during the first eight months of 2026, bringing the documented total to at least 187.
Rights groups said the actual figure could be higher because some executions are not publicly announced by Iranian authorities.
Afghans Executed For Drugs
Most Afghan nationals executed during the period had been convicted in drug-related cases, while others faced charges including murder, espionage and involvement in anti-government protests.
Iran Human Rights says at least 111 Afghan citizens have been executed for drug-related offences alone since 2021.
The Iran-based Hengaw Human Rights Organisation reported that 29-year-old Afghan citizen Valijan Nourzay was executed at Rafsanjan Central Prison in Kerman province on September 2.
Iran Human Rights has reported several executions this year that it says were not announced by Iranian authorities or state media.
The Taliban authorities in Afghanistan have so far announced no specific action in response to the executions.
